Legislators in North Carolina try to ban "foreign law" in courts
April 29, 2011
North Carolina: A group of legislators in the North Carolina House of Representatives have proposed House Bill 640, which would ban courts in the state from considering "foreign law" while ruling on cases. Legislator George Cleveland is concerned with Sharia law superceding United States law in the courts. Of course, when taking the oath of office, all judge swear allegiance to the U.S. Constitution.[1]
Critics of the proposed legislation contend the language is too broad, so the consequences are unknown. Also, when pressed for an example that the bill would hope to prevent, Representative Cleveland said he could not think of one. The Republicans that dominate the House Judiciary Committee approved the measure last week. Next it will be voted on in the full House.[1]
